How to auto redirect complete contents of one website to another after merge or migration
Recently I merged one of my other blog with the OrangeCopper™ Webmaster and the migration went on smoothly and sucessfully. Post the merging of the contents of two blogs, I migrated the entire webmaster community on to a VPS server from Inmotion Hosting to ensure better performance, stability with the increasing visitors and traffic.
A critical aspect of the above scenario and series of events is that the blog I moved here had a decent Search Engine prescence (PR3 Blog) with a decent amount of monthly organic search traffic. Now, obviously I would not want to loose the traffic and the PR link juice I enjoyed on my other blog with this merger act. Hence, I decided to do a 301 redirect from the older website to the corresponding individual pages of my new website.
Important points to note:
- Individual page redirection is NOT practical for larger websites
- post migration, Search Engines needs to identify where the old article would be right now
- use below code to enable automatic “complete” redirection of ALL content on old domain to the corresponding new domain content.
- This reduces 404 page not found errors and transferes the traffic seamlessly to the new domain.
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http:
Example of the migrated link:: www.napincome.com/how-to-blog-without-any-niche-expertise/
The above link when clicked seamlessly redirects to the corresponding content on the target domain. This is the major advantage of the 301 redirects through the .htaccess file in the root folder (public_html) of the domain hosting.
